Reviewing the show Left Lion’s Sarah Morrison said:

What happens when you take a German contemporary pop artist and a doodle artist from the Midlands, and give them a synth, some sample pads, a ukulele and a projector? Well, one of the most fun, light hearted and engaging gigs you’re likely to have been to in a while, for starters.
Jim Avignon and Jon Burgerman, both internationally renowned artists in their own rights, have decided to put down the pens and paintbrushes for a bit and team up to start making some music.

The Nottingham Drinker, Nottingham’s local CAMRA newsletter were kind enough to feature the Cafe Bar Contemporary in their February /March issue. Not only did they congratulate us on our choice of cask ales but also on supporting LocAle by choosing local brewery Castle Rock.

Here’s what Nottingham Drinker had to say about the Cafe Bar Contemporary

Picture This

Nottingham Contemporary, the City’s newest, multi-million pound centre for the visual arts at Weekday Cross, opened towards the end of last year with a major exhibition of painter David Hockney’s early works.

The building is an impressive venue for such events even if, at first sight, it does somewhat resemble a corrugated motor repair shop, but should the art works themselves not be to everyone’s taste, it is unlikely the Cafe Bar Contemporary on the lower floor will disappoint. Unsurprisingly light and modern with simple, black tables and chairs contrasting against a pale wood floor and picture windows hung with curtains featuring a novel till receipt motif, it offers a short but imaginative menu and cask-conditioned beers to wash the food down.

Stylish handpumps dispense well kept Castle Rock Harvest Pale and Elsie Mo beers and the management are to be congratulated for not only offering real ale, something of a rarity in similar establishments, but also supporting a local brewery and thereby, the LocAle concept.

Best of all, admission is free so check it out and see what you think.

Could this be the first art gallery to appear in the Good Beer Guide?

Cafe.Bar.Contemporary is a Work of Aet

New York artist Matthew Brannon has given us possibly the most stylish art café in the country. He has designed murals, a screen and curtains that suggest a 50s American advertising aesthetic – sharp, sleek and sexy – and the lifestyles it invoked. Coffee cups, typewriters, flight and train tickets are the props for a fictionally glamorous lifestyle. Brannon’s work turns the Café Bar customers into the protagonists of chic yet cynical short stories. Blank notepads suggest that they are about to be written by us all.

Matthew Brannon is a painter based in New York City. Brannon studied at the University of California graduating with a BA in 1995, and completed his MFA in 1999 at Columbia University in New York. His work has been exhibited at galleries and museums including Kunsthalle Dusseldorf and the Badischer Kunstverein in Germany, the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, PS1 Contemporary Art Center in New York, The Royal Academy in London, and MAK in Vienna

When the gallery opens the food and drink at the cafe will also be served by a local, independent chain. The people who operate The Walk cafe in Bridlesmith Walk will also be running the gallery’s Cafe.Bar.Contemporary.

The cafe’s aim is to appeal to the wide range of guests that will visit the gallery and be low-price for families – sandwiches will start at around £4 and the larger meals will be no more than £10.50.

Lynn Hannah said the Cafe Bar Contemporary operators were the obvious choice.

She said: “We had a lot of applicants to run our cafe from all over the country, including some big operators. the Cafe Bar Contemporary won hands down, no question about it. Their levels of enthusiasm, creativity and commitment just exceeded everyone else.

“They are creating something very special for us that we think will be the envy of the art world.”

Cafe general manager Chris Stamp said it was important to use locally-sourced ingredients where possible.

He said: “We’ve tried to use as many local suppliers as possible – for example we have got Castle Rock ales as the centre piece of our bar. We will also have access to the big performance space so we can do music events which will involve a lot of people from the local music scene.”
